Seminar title:

History of Technology in China and China’s Strategic Options

Abstract:

It will be a three-part presentation covering the history of technology in China and China’s strategic options as it carves out its place in the world, the journal Production and Operations Management (POM), and the journal Management and Business Review (MBR).

History of Technology in China and China’s Strategic Options:  Before the Industrial Revolution, China was the world leader in technological inventions and the world’s largest manufacturer.  Yet, it failed to become a major exporter.  Exports could have helped it to unleash a quality evolution and to expand its economy further.  During the Industrial Revolution, China’s manufacturing output decreased because of military conquests by Britain.  I will discuss why China missed the opportunity to become a naval power before the Industrial Revolution, which contributed to its fate during the Industrial Revolution.   China’s has once again emerged as the world’s largest manufacturer and the world’s largest economy, both driven by its exports.  I will suggest that to succeed in its belt-and-road initiative and to establish itself as a world leader, China should pursue a quality revolution similar to what Japan did in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and it should seek a strategic alliance with India.

The Journal Production and Operations Management (POM):  I will discuss the journal’s reputation and standing and its review process.  I will also discuss approaches to write papers that would be acceptable and widely read and cited.

The Journal Management and Business Review (MBR):  I will describe the mission of the journal, its community, and its Chinese  language edition.  I will also describe the opportunity for your university, students, and alumni. I will then discuss the opportunities for publishing in MBR.
